WHO WE ARE
The Moloka'i Wetland Partnership (MWP) is made up of local groups representing traditional knowledge and expertise, as well state and national organizations.
Our vision is an interconnected network of diverse and resilient wetlands that support thriving community traditional practices, native flora and fauna, and ecosystem services in the face of climate change and sea-level rise.
WHAT CAN WETLAND RESTORATION DO?
- Revitalize traditional loʻipūnāwai (spring fed taro pondfields) and loko iʻa (fishponds) for sustainable local food.
- Improve wetlands that provide safe and productive places for waterbirds. These birds are part of the cultural heritage of the Hawaiian people.
PROJECTS TO DATE
- Completed a five-year Goals and Objectives document.
- Completed a rapid assessment of wetlands on South Shore.
- Created a wetland prioritization tool.
- Planned a Community Restoration Scoping Project to guide restoration of the Kākahaʻia National Wildlife Refuge.
- A NFWF National Coastal Resilience Grant is funding community engagement and technical assessments at priority wetland sites. The community vision will inform project design for future wetland restoration.
